Over the past couple of weeks, our family has been dealing with a series of head colds. Come to think of it, we may just be dealing with one never-ending cold. The good news is we seem to finally be coming out of it now. However, for a while there, I was feeling nothing like myself and wanted to do nothing more than sleep the congestion away.

Like most people, when I’m feeling under the weather, I crave comfort foods. Most often, I long for a thick and hearty chicken noodle soup. There is just something about it that warms me up and makes me feel cozy from the inside out.

A pot full of comforting goodness.

Ingredients:

4 cups of chicken broth
1/2 cup of butter
3 Tbsp. oil
3 cooked chicken breasts, diced
1 carrot, peeled and diced
2 stocks of celery, diced
1 onion, diced
3 tbsp parsley
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 tsp oregano
1 tsp thyme
3 cups Chickapea penne pasta
Salt and pepper to taste

In a large pot, heat oil and add carrots, celery and onions and saute until veggies are soft and onions are translucent.

Add garlic and saute for 1-2 minutes.

Add chicken broth, parsley, oregano, thyme, salt and pepper. Add in butter and stir until melted and well mixed.

Add diced chicken and parsley and simmer gently for 5-7 minutes.

Stir in pasta and simmer approximately 7 minutes, until pasta is cooked.

And just like that, you have a buttery, creamier version of a typical, everyday comfort food.

So delicious.

How the hell do we keep our kids’ damn mittens on?!

I am overjoyed to spread the good news that the answer is finally here! Meet MittGrips! A innovative sleeve that works with any mitts or gloves to keep them in place and also keep the snow out. You simply slide these sleeves over any regular mittens before your child puts on their jacket. They hold the mitts in place and keep the snow out.

Easy as 1, 2, 3.

The idea for MittGrips was formed when inventor Roger Tremblay and his wife, Melissa, were spending more outdoor time chasing their daughter’s mittens, than they were actually playing. They tried out the same tired old solutions that we’ve all used with strings, clips, etc. However, none of those really seemed to solve the problem at hand. Pun intended.

Roger and Melissa decided to launch MittGrips on Kickstarter in order to get the funding needed to place the first production order. Backers are rewarded with first access to the product in return for their contribution. If you are unfamiliar with how Kickstarter works, the project’s financial goal needs to be met or exceeded in order to succeed. In the event that the goal is not met by the end of the Kickstarter campaign, backers don’t pay their pledge. Without Kickstarter, MittGrips is unsure when they will actually be able to bring the product to market.

Our MittGrips Review

Today we got to try out MittGrips on our little ones. We received size small for Cole and a large for Lilly. When they first arrived, I thought they looked a little snug, but they went on quite well. If they were not a secure fit, they wouldn’t be doing their job

Cole’s little baby mittens didn’t have thumbs, but the MittGrips still did a fantastic job of keeping them in place. This was Cole’s first real time out in the snow, so he was wiggling around like a maniac.

Those mitts are not going anywhere!

I may not be a huge fan of the winter season, but I certainly have a new appreciation for it when watching my kids enjoy it.

Lilly absolutely loves the snow. She would spend all day outside if we let her. She was right into it and immediately started on pelting Daddy with snow balls. She then moved on to making a snowman with matching snowbaby…

Obviously the winter season brings on a much higher risk of skin irritation due to the temperature and dry air. In our home, we already do all of the tips below. I do take extra care with moisturizer and use one I know is as natural as possible. Same goes for the kids’ body washes and shampoos. Softness is a prime feature when selecting towels for my little ones, since I know that can have an impact on their skin as well.

Both of my kids LOVE bath time. So convincing them not to linger in the tub can be a bit tricky. Lilly has now started to ask for showers more often, but Cole is just getting started with loving the bath. I’ve never seen anyone make a splashy mess in the bathroom quite like that little guy! However, bath time is one of those activities that can be too much of a good thing. It’s all a balancing act to make sure they are cleaned without drying them out.

FIVE WAYS TO SOOTHE SENSITIVE SKIN

With wintry winds and arid air come some fairly familiar sights. As the seasons change, chapped lips, rough hands, itchy limbs and raw, red noses become more and more common. With their brand-new skin, babies are even more susceptible to sensitivities than their parents. Not only is a baby’s skin thin and delicate, but it produces fewer moisturizing oils than that of adults. To help protect your little one from the winter weather ahead, Disney Baby has put together five simple ways to lock in skin’s moisture.

When it comes to tub time, don’t dwell

For many babies, bath time is a lot of fun and it can be a great way to calm down before bed. But if your little one is prone to dry skin, try to keep baths short and sweet. Limit tub time to ten minutes or less, use warm water instead of hot, and don’t let your little one soak in suds.

In wintry months, more moisturizer is a must

Apply moisturizer every twelve hours, to make sure baby’s skin stays soft and smooth. This is particularly important after a bath. Take this time to rub some baby lotion or oil into your little one’s damp skin, and then tuck your tot into a cozy towel to lock that moisture in.

 If your house is dry, humidify

If you notice that your house is dry, try getting a cool-mist humidifier, like this cute Winnie the Pooh one, or adding a humidifier to your furnace. After all, moisture in the air adds moisture to the skin.

 Hydrate the inside, to hydrate the outside

Ensure that your little one has plenty to drink. Add a little extra formula to your baby’s bottles, or, if you’re still breastfeeding, try to do it more often. If your little ones are more than 6 months old, keep a learner cup on hand and make sure they are drinking plenty of water so they can replace the moisture that’s evaporating from their skin.

To avoid diaper rash, ditch diapers quickly

In the winter, the skin on your baby’s bottom is more vulnerable to irritants. To prevent diaper rash, change your little one’s diaper often and allow some diaper-free time to give baby’s bum some air. For added protection, use a diaper cream or petroleum jelly to protect your little one’s skin from friction.

It’s the second most wonderful time of the year! The Fall 2014 Toronto BabyTime Show is just around the corner. If you’re a regular to this blog, then you know that the show is one of my favorite events of the year. Between spring and fall shows, I think I have attended at least 6 times. I may be a wee bit obsessed.

For anyone who is new to this parenting gig, or will be joining our ranks shortly, the BabyTime show is the ultimate location to gain a ton of valuable information, safety knowledge and product in sight. Brands big and small head down to the show armed with coupons and samples. Various organizations and parenting services provide informative seminars an awesome information pamphlets. Long story short, at the end of the day you leave the event with a very large, very full bag of goodies to go through.

One of my favorite aspects of the BabyTime show is the way it highlights new and innovative products and services. I’ve said it before and it still remains true now, some of the coolest baby and toddler gadgets and gear I’ve ever discovered have been at the BabyTime show.

Each season, I had to the show with a few specific items in mind. This time around we are doing some heavy research in car seats. At only seven months old our little man is already over 20 pounds. This means I soon have to say goodbye to the ease of the baby carrier, and move him into a rear facing 3-in-1 style car seat. There are a few brands that I have my eye on, and I’m excited to be able to actually see, touch and feel the various seats and their features at the show.

My leading contender is the BRITAX ClickTight Convertible car seat. This seat uses an innovative new way to lock into your vehicle. Making it incredibly secure, but using a technique that takes the hassle out of car seat installation. The car set itself also looks very cozy for the little one and provides a leading level of safety.

I also have a few products in mind that Cole will be growing into shortly. I think there is a misconception that you won’t need to buy all new things for baby #2. Now that I have baby #2, I realize that some items just don’t last that long There is a list of items we may have had for Lilly that have either not lived long enough to see Cole, or have been lost over the years. So I am in search of a handful of things that we loved for her, and now need for him. Below are just a couple products I will be checking out at the BabyTime show.

The Miracle 360 degree trainer cup from Munchkin: Colton is a distracted eater. He wants to look here, there and everywhere and expects his milk to simply follow. We want to transition him to a cup that he can hold, so that he can take his time and move as needed. I am super impressed with this awesome innovative cup from Munchkin. I could explain it, but this video gives the wow factor better than my words could.

Laugh & Learn Smart Stages Chair from Fisher-Price: Many of the baby toys & gear we had for Lilly were hand-me-downs, which was amazing to have. However, many of them wore out over time. Also, we learned quickly that baby gear & toys can over take a house once you factor in all their different stages of play. That’s why I love the looks of the new Smart Stages Chair. It is functional, compact and will grow with our little guy.

Having a game plan of a few items you know you want more info on can help you get the most out of the show. Aside from the above mentioned products, I will also be on the look out for some innovations in teethers, a few new baby-proofing tricks and awesome baby toys for Cole’s first Christmas.

For the first time in a while, I think I will be attending the show kid-free. However, if you are thinking of bringing the little ones, there is a ton of fun activities for them. Many major brands such as Lego and Play-Doh have play centers that kids can enjoy. There is also handy changing stations and very comfortable nursing/bottle warming rooms set up. Overall, it is likely the most family friendly consumer show you will ever step foot in.

We are already seeing this love for the motion screen with our daughter, Lilly. Of course, this brings on the need for rules & careful monitoring.

Time spent in front of the TV is an ongoing current battle at our place. There is nothing more frustrating than Lilly crying over her show being turned off. Especially when she has a huge playroom full of toys and books.

We also have to be concerned over what she has access to. When watching a kid-friendly television station, it’s not a big deal. However, like many families now, we are all addicted to a specific video streaming app. My husband and I love being able to watch great movies and seasons of whatever gritty tv show we’re into. However, leaving that app open for Lilly can be risky.

Sure, I can set the app to a certain age category for her to browse through. However, since our 3 year old can work the tablet better than her father, it doesn’t take her long to get back to the main menu and choose from any video content she lays eyes on.

When I learned about Kidoodle.TV, it sounded perfect for us. Unlike other streaming services, Kidoodle.TV is designed ONLY with kids in mind. All of the content is kid friendly and is broken into age groups. You can lock down your child’s age group, so they only ever see what is appropriate for them. Further more, you can then go into the full list of titles and block any that you don’t want your child to watch.

For instance, if there is a particular whiny 4 year old…who’s name rhymes with bayou…you can axe him from the available list of choices. I was sold on that feature alone. For that exact reason. And that exact show.

Another great feature of Kidoodle.TV is that we can set viewing time limits. This is is done in the Parents Room and is adjustable with a specific code. This has come in handy in recent weeks, since there have been times where I am holding a screaming newborn and can’t really get to the remote for the TV. Instead, the service gives her a “time is up” screen and that is all there is to it. Fight is over before it begins

With a great selection of shows and movies to choose from, there is a more than enough to give Lilly plenty of variety, but with all the control that I want to have as a parent.

When Lilly was diagnosed with Celiacs Disease at age 2, I was very worried that some of her life experiences would be limited. For her first birthday, I had gone with a pink and orange floral theme. I wanted something that was cute and fun, just like my little lady. As with most 1st birthdays, it was mainly just friends and family that attended, but we still had one heck of a full house. It was a great way to celebrate her first year.

You could definitely say that I went a little all out for the party. We had decorations all over the deck and back yard, games for the bigger kids and jammed packed goodie bags. We even went out and bought a pool…then subsequently drained our well and blew our pump. Good times. But it was all worth if for the incredible day of memories.

Being pregnant with my second, I am now a pro at this pregnancy thing. So naturally, I had prenatal vitamins on the go when we started to try for baby #2.
