I created my first Portable North Pole video back in 2009! I was pregnant with Lilly and excited about all the future Christmas’ I would experience as a Mama. However, since I didn’t have a little one to watch the video yet, I created a personalized message from Santa to a good friend’s little guy and sent it to her via email. Like me, she loves this time of year, so I knew she would appreciate it. Sure enough, she messaged me later that night to say thank you and that watching her little guy get so excited for the message brought tears to her eyes.

Lilly, watching the elves and Santa deliver her 2014 personalized message. I can’t wait to see her face light up during this year’s video!

When 2010 rolled around, we created our first video for our little Lilly! She was 4 months old and it was certainly more for us than her, but the magic had officially begun in our household. We have never missed a year since and can honestly say it has always brought tears to our eyes as well. Magic truly is the word to describe the look on her face and the permanent smile lingering after.

This year will be the first year our son Cole is old enough to understand some of the Christmas magic. Santa will start with his signature, “Well hello there Colton!” I am so excited to show Cole his video because I know he will stare wide-eyed and mumble a toddler style “hiii” and wave back. I can’t wait to see the look on his face when Santa shows him the workshop and the reindeer.

About the Portable North Pole

If you’re not familiar with the Portable North Pole (PNP), they create the world’s most engaging, personalized Santa video messages. It gives you the ability to bring Santa Claus directly into your home via video message, complete with details and photos of your kids. It brings them such an in depth personalized video that truly comes across in a realistic way. I was blown away the first time I saw it and equally impressed with the way they have grown it since.

There are plenty of ways to share in the magic for free and the “elves” have been busy working to make PNP easier to use and extra personalized. There’s a new mobile version (compatible with Apple and Android devices) so you can carry the magic of Santa in your pocket, creating personalized video messages and calls on the go. PNP is also available now in English, French and Spanish!

The PNP website has plenty of Christmas stories to share with the kids you love …or funny video options for the adults you want to embarrass in your life. We may or may not have stuck the boss on the naughty list this year at my office and sent the video via email to the whole team….

To say that our little man is always on the go would be a gross understatement. Over the last few months, we have watched him go from fairly mobile to complete and utter chaos. Unless he is sleeping or eating, he literally does not stay still for more than 3 minutes. We decided it was time to switch to a new variety of Huggies to accommodate our Little Mover

See a box, must climb the box.

Up until now, we have used Huggies Little Snugglers and Little Snugglers Post. I have always loved that variety for how soft the diapers feel and how cozy and snug they fit my little ones. I have always trusted them to provide excellent absorbency with incredible softness.

While we really haven’t had any leaks with our diapers until now, the fit isn’t quite holding up to Cole anymore. With running, climbing, jumping, bending, more climbing, I found I was often finding his diapers bunching up around his legs. It left him more uncomfortable and therefore, needing to be changed more often.

I wanted to switch to a diaper that would keep up with him and move the way he moves. I knew that Huggies Little Movers Plus would be the best choice. These diapers are made from Huggies most absorbent diaper (other than Huggies Overnights, which we also swear by) and still offer an ultra soft, dry to the touch liner. They are also made with a soft, breathable outer cover, making them great for preventing diaper rashes. The feature I really love is the Double Grip Strips, which hold the stretchy waist band together in two places.

Translation – these diapers will move with my mini man, keep him dry and be soft against his little bottom. A winning combination in my books.

We used to buy our Huggies wherever we saw them on sale, but with both Huggies Little Snugglers Plus and Little Movers Plus now exclusively available at Costco, we have found a deal that can’t be beat. The case sizes are huge, meaning we have to buy diapers less frequently. Both diapers come in sizes 1-6 and feature adorable Mickey and Friends designs.

With the craziness of newborn life, I haven’t even had a chance to tell you all the super exciting news: I am a Disney Mom! I am officially part of the Disney Baby Mom Ambassador program for Canada. Check out the super cute badge right over there ——>

Anyone who knows me personally, knows that I am a total Disney addict. I get just as excited to see a new movie as my daughter does. Maybe even more… As part of the Mom Ambassador program, Disney will provide me with some tips and information each month, that I can then share with all of you. I will occasionally get some goodies to review as well So here goes, my first official Disney post.

———————————————-

When we first discovered we were pregnant with our son, a couple wonderful thoughts went through my mind. One of them was the fact that thanks to maternity leave, I would have my first full summer off since I was 15 years old. Although our daughter was born in early August, I really didn’t get out at all that summer. I was a first time mom with a brand new baby…I barely left the house until fall.

However, this time, with Colton being born in March, I had planned on making the most of summer 2014.

Enjoying the nice shade of the stroller while big sis Lilly plays at the park.

Our little guy turned out to be a pretty a colicky baby, so that has limited our outings a little bit. Let’s just say that my hopes haven’t been the reality, as is often the case with motherhood…we tend to dream big That being said, we have a park around the corner and plenty of family friends also off. As Cole gets a little older, he’s having less frequent fussy days and we are starting to plan out the second half of our summer.

With plans for the zoo, the beach and picnics in the park, I was a little stumped on how to deal with a tiny baby in the summer sun. By the time we really enjoyed sunny outdoor time with Lilly, she was nearly a year old. She could wear baby sunscreen, sit up with a hat on, etc. The rules are different when you are headed outdoors with a little one under 6 months old.

Luckily for me, Disney Baby provided some great tips for how to enjoy the summer weather, while staying safe and cool.

EIGHT WAYS:

TO KEEP BABY COOL ON HOT SUMMER DAYS

Summer with a baby can be a lot of fun. There are plenty of outdoor activities you can enjoy together and lots of new spaces for baby to explore. But if you’re not properly prepared, it can also be hot, sticky and downright unpleasant. When you’re outside with your baby in the summer heat, comfort and safety are key. Here are some tips from Disney Baby on how to keep your little one cool, so you can get back to having fun in the sun.

Embrace Layering – Make sure you don’t overdress your baby. Loose-fitting, lightweight clothes are best, and light layers mean you can add and remove clothes as necessary.

Choose Cotton – Dress your baby in natural fibres. Cotton breathes and absorbs sweat more effectively than synthetic fabrics. Disney Baby offers lots of adorable summer options, like this Layette Set or this Minnie Mouse Skirted Creeper.

Stick to the Shade – Stay in the shade when you can find it and create some when you can’t. Buying an umbrella stroller is a great way to ensure that your little one is always protected from the sun.

Keep Baby Hydrated – If you’re spending a lot of time in the heat, you need to spend a lot of time nursing as well. Like you, your baby gets dehydrated and needs to replenish fluids. If your baby is older, make sure you always have Sippy Cups ready at hand.

Find Some Air-Conditioning – Malls, movie theatres and libraries all have air conditioning, and offer a great place to take a break from the heat. Not to mention, they’re a great place for both you and your baby to find entertainment.

Buy a Hat – Protect your baby’s head and neck with a cotton summer hat. This Winnie the Pooh Hat features a chin strap so it will stay firmly in place.

Have a Splash – Letting your baby play in a paddling pool or on a splash pad is a fun and easy way to cool them down. If you don’t have access to one of these, try a cool bath, or simply sprinkle some water on your baby’s hair.

I’m not going to lie, we are a tv loving household. That is the straight up truth. Between my husband and I, we follow over a dozen shows & I have always been a huge movie buff.

We are already seeing this love for the motion screen with our daughter, Lilly. Of course, this brings on the need for rules & careful monitoring.

Time spent in front of the TV is an ongoing current battle at our place. There is nothing more frustrating than Lilly crying over her show being turned off. Especially when she has a huge playroom full of toys and books.

We also have to be concerned over what she has access to. When watching a kid-friendly television station, it’s not a big deal. However, like many families now, we are all addicted to a specific video streaming app. My husband and I love being able to watch great movies and seasons of whatever gritty tv show we’re into. However, leaving that app open for Lilly can be risky.

Sure, I can set the app to a certain age category for her to browse through. However, since our 3 year old can work the tablet better than her father, it doesn’t take her long to get back to the main menu and choose from any video content she lays eyes on.

When I learned about Kidoodle.TV, it sounded perfect for us. Unlike other streaming services, Kidoodle.TV is designed ONLY with kids in mind. All of the content is kid friendly and is broken into age groups. You can lock down your child’s age group, so they only ever see what is appropriate for them. Further more, you can then go into the full list of titles and block any that you don’t want your child to watch.

For instance, if there is a particular whiny 4 year old…who’s name rhymes with bayou…you can axe him from the available list of choices. I was sold on that feature alone. For that exact reason. And that exact show.

Photo credit – Views from the Couch.

Another great feature of Kidoodle.TV is that we can set viewing time limits. This is is done in the Parents Room and is adjustable with a specific code. This has come in handy in recent weeks, since there have been times where I am holding a screaming newborn and can’t really get to the remote for the TV. Instead, the service gives her a “time is up” screen and that is all there is to it. Fight is over before it begins

With a great selection of shows and movies to choose from, there is a more than enough to give Lilly plenty of variety, but with all the control that I want to have as a parent.

I grew up in a household where birthdays were always a big deal. Naturally, this is something that I have now brought into my own family, planning big, theme-based parties each year for Lilly.

For her first birthday, I had gone with a pink and orange floral theme. I wanted something that was cute and fun, just like my little lady. As with most 1st birthdays, it was mainly just friends and family that attended, but we still had one heck of a full house. It was a great way to celebrate her first year.

You could definitely say that I went a little all out for the party. We had decorations all over the deck and back yard, games for the bigger kids and jammed packed goodie bags. We even went out and bought a pool…then subsequently drained our well and blew our pump. Good times. But it was all worth if for the incredible day of memories.

With our little man, Cole, due in just a few weeks, I already have visions of planning a little boy’s first birthday

Our little man is set to make his entry in less than 3 months. As such, nesting has officially started to kick in. While I assumed there would be less to get with a 2nd child, I’m realizing that we really do need to stock up on a lot of the essentials. That’s why Baby Days from the Sears Baby Room could not have come at a better time.

Just as I did right before Lilly was born, I have placed everything we have for our new baby in the middle of the to-be nursery. There is a ridiculously satisfying feeling that come from sorting and organizing baby clothes and supplies. Kind of like a Christmas morning feeling just for pregnant women. After going through everything we had and have been given, I came to a very quick conclusion.

We really don’t need any more clothes! Thanks to the generosity of friends and family, we are more than set for the entire first year of this little man’s life.

This is just the newborn-12 months clothes!

Now, while we might be set for clothes, we definitely need to stock up on many of the other basics for a newborn baby. We have very little when it comes to wash cloths and receiving blankets. Most of them were pretty beat up by the end of the baby stage with Lilly. Many have since been donated to her baby dolls. We also realized that the few crib sheets and blankets we have left are 90% pink. While that’s really not a big deal, it would be nice to get a few that match our son’s nursery and are just his.

We also need to get a couple major pieces of furniture. I must have a glider, something I regrettably never had with my daughter’s nursery, and a change table. We didn’t keep Lilly’s, since it had taken quite a beating in our move last year.

Needless to say, we will be taking full advantage of the upcoming Baby Days!

There is one specific book that came in the mail every year around the holidays when I was a kid. I would watch for this book and hound my mom to check the post office everyday in anticipation. The book, of course, is the Sears Wish Book!

Now, getting the book in the mail was the easy part. Wresting with my brothers to ensure I got first crack at the toy selection was the harder part. The tradition in our house was to go through the Sears Wish Book and circle the items that we would like most, with an initial beside each circle. We then had to write out our letter to Santa with those items and give the lists and the book to mom.

Of course, she got it all off to Santa for us.

Now, at not quite 3 and a half, Lilly is a bit young to really make a full Christmas list. She basically wants just about every. single. toy. she lays her eyes on. This leaves identifying some of the items she really wants a little more difficult. In starting our own tradition, we looked through the Sears Wish Book at all the possibilities. It was clear that some toys got her more excited than others. We circled them and discussed why she thought they would be perfect choices to tell Santa.

While the list was quite lengthy, here were are few of her main choices.

Lilly was quick to point out that this combines Play Doh and a couple of her favourite Disney Princesses. Obviously, it made the list.

Play-Doh® Disney Princess® ‘Design-A-Dress Boutique’ Play Set

Anyone who knows my child, knows that she is obsessed with all things My Little Pony. Of course this means that we have seen the new movie about 100 times. The one where the “ponies become girls”. When she spotted this, I think she literally squealed.

This last one is a toy we could both agree on. Lilly has a dino fetish. She has collected dozens of dinosaur toys in all different shapes and sizes. She has even collected rocks and leaves to make her “dino world” look more realistic. When we saw this incredible toy bin that doubles as a play mat, I think we both got equally excited! Now, I just need to find one for ponies too…

There are so many pregnancy essentials that make the list. It can be tough to know where to start and make sure you cover all of your bases. However, nearly every women knows one thing she needs to do immediately; go get prenatal vitamins! Enter Nestlé Materna.

Being pregnant with my second, I am now a pro at this pregnancy thing. So naturally, I had prenatal vitamins on the go when we started to try for baby #2.

Note – I have <del>crazy</del> brave friends who have 6 kids. I am no where near pro.

Are prenatal vitamins fun? Well no, not always. They can kind of resemble horse pills and can be a little tricky to get down when you are battling the early stages of pregnancy. With this pregnancy, I struggled far worse with morning sickness than I ever did with Lilly. The last thing I wanted to do was shove pills down my throat. However, I have still made sure to take my vitamins everyday. Why? Because it is what is best for me and my baby.

A bit about the benefits of Nestlé Materna

Whether a woman is planning to get pregnant soon, pregnant now or breastfeeding, Nestlé Materna prenatal / postnatal vitamins help nourish their body with folic acid to help prevent neural tube defects when taken daily prior to becoming pregnant and during early pregnancy. They also provide 22 other essential vitamins and minerals they and baby need through pregnancy and nursing.

Experts say that when starting your family planning, you should start taking prenatal vitamins right away. Ideally, you want to have them in your system 12 weeks prior to becoming pregnant. Learn more about why prenatal and postnatal vitamins are important for you and your baby.

To give expecting moms a head start, Nestlé has put together a prize pack themed as “pregnancy essentials”. It includes special treats to keep mom and baby healthy and happy at every stage. This gift basket is perfect to keep for yourself or would make a great gift for an expecting mom during the upcoming holiday season.

I’ve mentioned a few times on here lately that Christmas is my favourite time of the year. While that is true, there is also a certain art that is required to survive the holiday shopping rush. Now, not everything in my life is all that organized, but the holidays is one place my planning skills shine.

When it comes to getting a handle on my Christmas shopping, I start early. I make lists and watch for deals. Now, depending on how old your kids are, you have to shop early with caution. We thought we were pretty much done for Lilly…and now all she talks about is a dollhouse! That’s kind of a big one to toss in at the end of shopping. Thank goodness for VoVo (grandpa)!

For a lot of parents, it can be the list making that can be the most difficult. When kids are young, they want EVERYTHING they see. When they hit the tween/teen stage, they can be a lot more specific and picky. You could also have the curse of that child that has no idea what they want at all. I believe my husband must have been that kid. He is always the most difficult person on my list!

Mattel has made the list creation process much easier this year with their online Gift Guide. The guide uses various criteria points to help you find the right gifts for your little one. When I plugged in all the specifics for Lilly, one of the toys it suggested is the Little People® Disney Princess Klip Klop Stable. This particular item was pretty much at the top of Lilly’s list. She had played with it at the Fisher-Price booth at the BabyTime Show in Toronto and fell in love!

So you can imagine her excitement when Mattel sent her that exact gift as a thank you for this post. She was over the moon. It has been nearly two weeks and and has honestly not played with anything else.

Christmas has always been my favourite time of the year. I still remember the excitement of Christmas morning as a child. It didn’t matter what the gift was. It was the anticipation of the surprise. As a mom, I now know what it’s like to see the magic of giving from the other side of it all.

Christmas morning, 1988.

Lilly was only 4 months old on her first Christmas and didn’t really grasp any of the festivities. However, Christmas morning 2011 was a lot of fun. By then, she understood the excitement of it all and really got into it. It was particularly funny to watch her open each gift, get excited to play with it and then realize that there was still more to open.

“OMG! A car seat for my baby!” – Christmas 2011

By last year, she had this Christmas morning thing completely mastered and even put aside her own excitement to hand out gifts to Daddy and I, in between opening her own.

“Hmm. Where to begin…” – Christmas 2012

There are many holiday traditions that I couldn’t wait to share with my own family. One was the giving of a new tree ornament each year. This was something that my Mom started when I was young and still does to this day. I started this will Lilly on her first Christmas and we haven’t missed a year yet. When she has a home of her own one day, I will give her all of her yearly ornaments to start her first tree.

Another tradition that means more to me that I can express is Christmas day at my Nana’s house. In my 29 Christmases on this planet, I have only missed one at my grandparents house. Even now, living over 2 hours away, we still pack Lilly into the car a little before lunch and head down to the city. It was at one of these Christmas day celebrations that I broke the news that Lilly was on her way – the first of the great-grandchildren. I have so many memories of running around that house and the amazing Portuguese holiday feast that goes with it. Watching Lilly create those same memories melts me more than almost anything.

Lilly with great-Nana on Christmas day, 2011.

This year, Christmas has gotten very exciting. Lilly is now at the stage where she has been talking about Santa, Christmas morning, the tree, etc, for well over a month. This is the first year where she has started to express what she would like for Christmas and has asked me to please let Santa know for her. She’s started to talk about what she wants to get for Daddy and I. It’s incredible to see her get so wrapped up into the magic of it all.

Some of the things that have made her list this year? More animals for her Little People’s Farm and Zoo, books, a new dress, a dollhouse and basically anything and EVERYTHING to do with My Little Pony. It has been really great to see her ask for books. Lately, she has been interested in Little Critters and Bernstein Bears, both of which were favourites of mine as a child. Reading those stories with her each night brings back memories.

Do you know what your little ones have asked Santa for? Have you gotten a head start on your shopping? Sears has made it really easy this year to shop or explore online, with The Toy Shop.
